DVD: Drive Angry
Nic Cage might have won an Oscar for playing a morose drunk, but he’s made his millions by being over-the-top crazy and kicking some ass. Both are on full display in Patrick Lussier’s 3-D smashfest Drive Angry. Cage breaks out of hell with a fast car and a gun that can kill gods, and sets out to avenge his daughter’s death and save his granddaughter from a satanic cult planning to use her for sacrifice. Everything’s hunky-dory with Cage’s revenge spree until Satan sends his right-hand-man to recover him and the gun. Naturally, Nic tries to shoot him in the face. It’s a grindhouse race to the finish to see if Cage can get his revenge before the devil drags him back to hell.

Movie: X-Men: First Class
Like any good comic book, there comes a point when you’ve killed off too many characters and have to start over. The X-Men franchise is on to it’s fifth movie, and Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Halle Berry (sigh) are nowhere to be seen. But James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender bring us the story of Magneto and Professor X’s early years, including the first class of mutants at Xavier’s Academy. We get a young Mystique, winged Tempest, and Moira McTaggert (apparently there are some guys too). With nothing less than a shootout between missile-firing submarines and, oh yeah, two guys that can move things with telepathy and magnetism, the action gets hot and heavy (much like January Jones in a white bikini and fur).
Music: My Morning Jacket – Circuital
It’s hard to figure out what My Morning Jacket will show up on any given day. Like many country-rockers who actually rocked (CCR, Neil Young, Allman Brothers, etc.), MMJ can be mournful on the lap guitar, or kick you in the face with some guitar god antics. On Circuital, Jim and the boys have a few of both moments, plus the occasional Black Keys-esque hints of soul. For the icing on the cake, Jones had written “Outta My System” for Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem to play in the next Muppets movie, but it instead finds a home here. Come to think of it, the whole album sounds even better when you picture Animal on drums…
Game: Hunted: The Demon’s Forge
Co-op video games have come a long way since Sonic and Tails. Nowadays, Warcraft maniacs have whole teams of specialized members with unique talents. But what about if you and your buddy just want to destroy some monsters together without sitting in front of a computer so long you regain your virginity? Hunted lets you dive into the action pretty quickly, and work together as a team with either AI or a buddy. Caddoc, the bruiser, can get right in the thick of it, while E’lara is better at sniping from a distance. All of their specials are designed not so much to overpower enemies as to set things up for your partner to do so—meaning nobody has to be the second banana at any point. You and your buddy might have to fight over who has to play as the chick, but think of it this way—at least you’ll get uninterrupted viewing of her ridiculously skimpy outfit.
Television
If you’re not playing golf this weekend, how about you watch some? The PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament is airing on CBS Saturday and Sunday. Last year Justin Rose made for an exciting finish, coming back from four strokes down to overcome Rickie Fowler on the final day. Who will win this year’s tournament and it’s $6.2 million prize.
