Interview: Danielle Fishel
You know who we don’t see enough? Danielle Fishel, everyone’s childhood crush. Even though she was busy getting married, writing a book, and filming a TV show, she kindly took a little time to speak with us about what’s going on.
What have you been up to lately?
I am in the process of writing a book called Normally, This Would Be Cause for Concern: Tales of Calamity and Unrelenting Awkwardness, so that has been keeping me busy! I’m not using a ghost writer and have instead chosen to write the book myself, which has been challenging and an incredible learning experience. We’ve also been in pre-production for Girl Meets World so there have been a lot of meetings and casting sessions and social get-togethers that I always look forward to being a part of. Oh, and I’m also doing a little thing called WEDDING PLANNING…so, to answer your question, I haven’t been up to too much.
Congratulations! On top of the exciting wedding festivities, you also recently graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a bachelor’s degree. Would you recommend attending school later in life to those considering?
I did! Going to college was the best decision I ever made and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has considered going back to school. Sure, there were some hurdles and of course it is hard to work, go to school, study, and still find time for some version of a social life but it IS temporary. School doesn’t last forever so I committed myself fully and got every single thing I could out of the experience. I haven’t even been out of college for a year yet and I already miss it.
How does it feel revisiting the role of Topanga for Girl Meets World? Do you feel back at home working with former Boy Meets World cast members?
Revisiting the role of Topanga has been so much fun and it also feels like what I imagine it would feel like if we could go back and re-live some of the best years of our lives. The seven years I spent doing Boy Meets World were incredible and life changing so to have the opportunity to work with the same people that I love so much, playing a character I love so much, AND getting paid to do it? It just feels like a dream. Because the Boy Meets World cast and crew is like a family to me, it absolutely feels like home when we’re all together.
Do you ever get tired of people referencing your role as “Topanga”?
You know what? I don’t. A lot of actors work their whole lives trying to create a character that will leave a lasting impression on people so I don’t know how I could be bothered by people who appreciate and love a character I was lucky enough to portray. Plus, the name Topanga is kind of hard to forget and certainly more salient than “Danielle.”
I loved your character “Lizdsay Taylorhan” on the The Soup. Do you prefer comedic roles?
Man, that was so much fun. First of all, the people at The Soup are so talented and funny and they love to take risks so it’s always an exciting atmosphere to be a part of. I prefer comedic roles 100%. There’s something so wonderful about laughter and I know that I seek out people who make me laugh, so if I can bring that to someone else every now and then, I want to do it.
What’s your favorite TV show at the moment?
Well, like everyone else in the world, I am feeling the effects of the “Breaking Bad hangover.” I have never been so invested in a show in my life and now I have a dark empty hole in the area of my soul that is satiated by excellent television. But I always watch SNL and anything Anthony Bourdain hosts. And I watch How I Met Your Mother.
You have a very strong social media presence and great sense of humor on both Twitter and Instagram. What is your favorite site/app right now?
Thank you! I love the immediacy of social media and the ability to instantly connect with people from all over the world about any number of topics. I was reluctant to join twitter a few years ago but once I did, I was hooked. It’s still my favorite site and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
Have you made any friends in real life through Twitter? What are some of your favorite accounts?
Actually, I have! I followed Jenny Johnson on twitter for a really long time and always thought she was hilarious and super smart. Then out of nowhere she started following me and we recently went and had drinks together. She’s even cooler in person, if that’s possible. Other favorite accounts include @theleanover, @UNTRESOR, @HiMyNameSam, @Amburglar_, and @boners. They all make me laugh on a regular basis and couldn’t be more different. Of course I also love a certain @MindyFurano but I hear she’s a real bitch.
Agreed. Now here comes a question I’m sure you’ve been asked often – what’s the craziest encounter you’ve ever had with a fan?
Well, the craziest encounter I’ve ever had with a fan was more than a decade ago in a restaurant. I went into a bathroom stall and within seconds there were 3 girls outside the door saying “Topanga! Topanga!” I said, “yeah?” And one of the girls shoved a piece of paper under the door and asked for my autograph. I asked her if she could wait until I was finished and she said yes and took the paper back. I came out of the stall and she immediately tried to hand it to me again so I told her it would be better for all of us if she would just let me wash my hands first. Unfortunately, I saw/read/heard Snooki tell an identical story so now I feel like I can’t even tell anyone about this experience for fear someone thinks I’m ripping off a Snooki story.
What’s one song you’d consider a guilty pleasure? We won’t judge.
Anything by LMFAO. I’m a sucker for dance/party tunes. “Shots” and “Party Rock Anthem” will put me in a good mood every time.
